The Jetta was 1st introduced in the mid-1980s as a slightly upscale version of the Rabbit hatchback and became Volkswagens bestseller in the U.S. The 5th-generation Jetta was introduced as a mid-year 2005 model that looked bigger, bolder and more powerful than its predecessor. The 2005 Jetta debuted with a new 150-horsepower 2.5-liter five cyl engine developed specifically for the U.S. market. A 1.9-liter TDI diesel with direct injection was added later in 2005 but discontinued after the 2007 model year. For 2009, the TDI returned to the Jetta lineup with lower emissions and better efficiency than previous versions. The 2011 Jetta will offer 4 different engine choices including a 2.0-liter turbodiesel direct injection (TDI) Clean Diesel with common rail injection that produces 140 horsepower and 236lb-ft of torque. Other engine choices are a 115-horsepower 2.0-liter, 170-hosrepower 2.5-liter and a 200-hrosepower turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI engine.
